Antarctica
The privileged few who visit Antarctica do so by sea. There is no easy ticket. We 21st Century ski mountaineers have central heating and hot water, but we are under sail, close to the elements, and ridiculously small in the immensity of the Southern Ocean. Like Bellingshausen, Bransfield, Ross and de Gerlache our first sightings of the seventh continent will be from the deck of a small sailing vessel. Our ascents and descents of the ice-covered mountains of the Peninsula are likely to be firsts or early repeats. The intensely powerful experiences of this expedition will leave their mark and stay with you forever. Trip Full

Kyrgyzstan
In January 23 instead of going to the Picos de Europa we went Kyrgyzstan and loved everything. It was such a great trip that I am excited to return in 2024. Other than when carpeted with spring flowers the mountains of Kyrgyzstan are at their most beautiful during the crisp, cold, sunny winter days. We aim to ski in three different areas and to see something of this small country of vast landscapes. We will visit the capital city Bishkek and Osh in the Fergana Valley. Travel will be by the usual mix of buses, trucks and old Russian vehicles. We may use horses to carry our stuff to the yurts.

USA Ski Road Trip
This is a classic rock ski road trip visiting three of the most famous mountain ranges for skiing in the western US, the Sawtooths of Idaho, the Beartooths of Montana and the Tetons of Wyoming. In each location we are teaming up with very experienced local guides to ensure we get the best skiing there is and top tips as to where we should be for the evening vibes. We should be skiing powder…….

Having enjoyed a superb week in the Polish Tatras in 2023, next year’s plan is to explore the Slovak side. We will be skiing the impressive peaks of the High Tatras and in the Nizke Tatry, the Low Tatras. Polish mountain guide Helena Roj will be skiing with us again. Helena has been guiding in the Slovak mountains for years and knows them well. The easiest and cheapest place to fly to is Budapest in Hungary. We will therefore take a little time to visit the city and we will also put down a few turns in Hungary on our way to Slovakia.

Norway – Romsdalen
Norway has become a justifiably popular destination for ski tourers. With one of the most beautiful mountainous coastlines in the world and reliable snow cover it could not be any other way. There is just so much to offer the skier with skins. Romsdalen is the choice for our tracks in 2024. We will be day touring from the comfortable Grand Hotel in Andalsnes – the epicentre of Romsdalen touring. Espen Nordahl, Norwegian ski guidebook author and avalanche expert will be accompanying us throughout. Trip Full

Iceland – The Far East
The mountains surrounding the magical eastern fjords are a relatively unexplored and unspoilt skiers paradise. Far from the crowds we will be skiing from summits rising to a maximum of 1200m right down to the clear blue sea. We will stop in fishing villages for a pre-ski coffee or post-ski beer and a perhaps a dip in geothermal pools. Each day we return to our comfortable cabins by the sea for a soak in the hot tub and dinner based on local delicacies such as reindeer, fresh fish and Greenland shark. There is also a pizza restaurant. Trip Full

The traverse of the Northern Alps of Honshu from Murodo to Kamikochi is arguably the best ski mountaineering journey I have done. In 2008 we were the first group of foreigners to make this ski traverse, becoming the second group on our return in 2009. This is a challenging tour for experienced ski mountaineers with a taste for adventure and comfortable with the challenges of hut-to-hut touring and steep terrain. Summits include Yarigatake 3180m and Japan’s third highest mountain 3190m Okuhotaka. We aim to finish with a ski descent of 3776m Fuji-san.

New Zealand
New Zealand’s South Island has fantastic skiing and our aim is to sample the best of what’s on offer. We will enjoy the glaciated mountains of the Mt Cook area, the magnificent west coast glaciers and the unique experience of a Kiwi club field. The trip starts with a day in the backcountry from Treblecone, Wanaka and then we’ll take things from there. This is a challenging trip for experienced ski mountaineers with a taste for adventure and comfortable with the challenges of self-catered hut-based touring. This is my sixth ski trip to NZ and I am delighted to be accompanied by my friend and colleague Whitney Thurlow IFMGA once again. If you need convincing that it’s worth it please look at the photos from previous trips. Trip Full.
